It is now well established that immune system dysregulation plays a role in major depressive disorder, with numerous studies linking peripheral cytokine alterations to depressed mood ( Dowlati et al., 2010 Howren et al., 2009) and others showing that anti-inflammatory treatment can help some depressed patients (those with elevated inflammatory markers at baseline) ( Haroon et al., 2018 Raison et al., 2013). ![]()
