How did Pete’s alternative “career” come about? ![]() Essentially, Curveball is my attempt to allay my son’s worst fears by showing him that even if part “B” came true, he would still be okay. that he would get an athletic injury and be unable to play high school sports. whether he would fit in in high school, and B. When he was in middle school, his two biggest worries were A. JS: I have a son who is now in high school. TWM: How did you come up with the idea for Curveball? I try to hear my character’s voice in my head and tell the story that comes. TWM: What goes through your head when you write? You’re known for achieving emotional depth – do you consciously think about how you want your readers to feel? Both wrote very funny books about bitingly sad topics, and I have tried to emulate that aspect of their work. JS: My two biggest influences were Frank McCourt (who was actually my high school creative writing teacher before he became famous) and Kurt Vonnegut. I grew up and became an English teacher who wrote novels after the kids went to bed. He was a high school biology teacher by day, and wrote biology textbooks by night. Everyone on my mom’s side of the family was a writer, and I wanted in! My maternal grandfather, Solomon Feldman was an especially huge influence.
